A WOMAN has been ordered to pay compensation to a police officer after she bit him. Sharna Elson had earlier walked into a petrol station naked and covered in blood.

Fearing she had been involved in a crime, horrified staff called the police. Elson became aggressive towards ambulance workers, who then took her to the Royal Stoke.

The 21-year-old had to be restrained by police officers and bit one of them during a struggle. She later said she had no memory of the incident and did not know how she came to be at the Euro Garage in Bucknall.

Prosecutor Zoe Leese told North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard: “Police were called to the garage to reports a naked female had entered the store covered in blood. The store was full of customers at the time. There was an incident with a member of staff.

“Officers attended and called for an ambulance. She was ushered into the ambulance but began to resist. She was aggressive towards ambulance workers.

“She is described as acting in a disorderly manner. Officers believed she was going to do herself harm. It took four officers to restrain her due to her behaviour.

“During the struggle, she bit an officer to his right wrist causing a minor break to the skin. She was sedated to calm her down.”

Elson, of Woodland Road, Newcastle, went on to plead guilty to assaulting an emergency worker. The court heard, at the time of the offence in March last year, she was subject to a community order received for two previous offences of assaulting emergency workers.

Garath Davies, mitigating, said he thought Elson may have been spiked prior to the incident. He said: “At the time, she was living in a flat around the corner from the garage. Customers and staff were taken by surprise by a lone female entering the store, naked and covered in blood.

“She was detained and taken to hospital by the police. Everybody was trying to find out what had gone on. I think she has probably been spiked and something put in her drink.

“She hasn’t got a clue what’s gone on or why she ended up in that dishevelled state, trying to harm herself.”

The court heard Elson had appeared in court in April to be sentenced for other matters and received a twomonth prison sentence, which she has served.

Mr Davies said: “If this offence had been sentenced at the same time, she would not have got any more because the sentence would have been concurrent. She has turned her life around in the past 12 months.”

Magistrates ordered Elson to pay £75 compensation to the officer, but imposed no other punishment. They said they took the decision because the matter would ordinarily have had been dealt with at the earlier court hearing.
