Boris’s only true belief is in Boris...
ALAN Rushton (Sentinel Letters), implies in his response to me that it was okay for Boris Johnson to stab Theresa May in the back because he disagreed with her about her deal to leave the EU – a deal, incidentally which bore a remarkable similarity to the one Mr Johnson himself concluded. Yet he seems to think Rishi Sunak should be castigated for resigning when he disagreed with the then Prime Minister. Double standards surely.
He claims Mr Johnson is a true Brexiteer. I’m afraid he is mistaken on that score. Johnson has never been a true supporter of anything other than his own political advancement.
In 2003, he told the House of Commons: “I am a bit of a fan of the European Union. If we did not have one, we would invent something like it.”
In 2011 he announced: “We are – and we will remain – a paid-up, valued, participating member of the Single Market. Under no circumstances, in my view, will a British government adjust that position.”
Mr Johnson’s view of the EU changes depending on what political capital his opinion would garner him at any given moment.
I’m still waiting for evidence of the huge success of Brexit we were promised by Mr Johnson and his cohorts.
