‘Such a shame the Hacienda closed’

-

I WAS the most uncool teenager travelling up to Manchester every fortnight to go to the Coronation Street studios tours from the late eighties up to the nineties.

My friends couldn’t understand it.

But one April in 1997 I was the coolest.

I stayed in Manchester and decided to go to the Hacienda for my birthday... I had the most amazing night.

I wish I had gone in its heyday as it closed in June, 1997.

It was eye-opening to watch a BBC documentary about the rave culture scene at the Hacienda and its subsequent financial failure, acrimony and violence.

I’m so glad I went when I did as it was demolished in 2002. But I’ve driven past it a few times and it’s now just flats. Such a shame as it was so iconic. And it was the club that shook Britain!
