A Grief-stricken son has told how he was given a twoweek notice to empty his late mum’s home – as he sorted out her funeral.

Now Ethan Martingiles, right, is calling on Aspire Housing to let him and his partner move into the three-bedroom property following the death of Natalie Martin-giles.

Natalie, below right, died in November, 2021 at the age of 52 and dadof-one Ethan says he had planned to move in with his mum to take care of her. But she passed away before he could make the move from his flat in Newcastle to his mum’s place in nearby Cross May Street.

Ethan had lived with his mum until he turned 21 and found his own place. His gran had also lived in the housing association property. He says it has remained empty since his mum’s death.

The 31-year-old said: “My mum had always said that no matter what happens she didn’t want to lose the family home where most of my family lived. My entire childhood was that house. I feel like they haven’t listened to me and have brushed off everything I have said.

“I’ve had days where I have been suicidal and I’ve got grievance counselling at the minute. One of the things that comes up is that I’ve also lost the house. I can’t now do the one simple thing that my mum asked me to do and it hurts.”

Aspire Housing says the property has been unoccupied due to a burst water pipe. It will be available to re-let soon.

Head of neighbourhoods Jon Dickin said: “We have been in contact with Mr Martin-giles to discuss his housing situation following the sad passing of his mother. We understand that this is a difficult situation.

“But, unfortunately, Mr Martin-giles does not meet the necessary requirements to inherit the tenancy for this property. There is also a limited supply of affordable family homes in our area, so it is important that threebedroom houses such as this are allocated correctly.

“This property has been undergoing essential maintenance works and will be available soon.”
