HONG KONG’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
BBC2, 9.30pm
This story of the 2019 protests follows the real lives of young Hong Kong citizens on the front lines.
It begins when a young, pregnant woman is brutally murdered by her boyfriend while on holiday in Taiwan.
Despite confessing to the murder back in Hong Kong, he cannot be prosecuted or extradited for the crime. The Hong Kong government proposes an extradition bill to allow the fugitive to be sent back to Taiwan to stand trial, but the bill would also allow extradition to other territories, including mainland China.
Protests against the new bill quickly escalate, as hundreds of thousands take to the streets feeling their freedom is being eroded. The protests begin peacefully, but soon the citizens find themselves drawn into a cycle of violence.
