FISHY TALE:

-

A wood carving of the biggest rod-caught salmon caught in Great Britain has gone on display. The fish – weighing 64lb – was captured by Georgina Ballantine on the River Tay in October, 1922.

To mark the centenary, a carving has gone on display in the bar at the Foxlowe Arts Centre in Leek until Christmas.

The carved wooden replica has been made by Cliff Beardmore, from Leek, who is one of the country’s leading fish carvers. Cliff, pictured, said: “The details for the carved fish were taken from a cast on display at The John Norris Countryware Shop at Penrith.

“The salmon was gifted to the Royal Perth Infirmary and was relished by both patients and staff.

“The record for the heaviest British rod caught salmon of 64lb still stands today and is never likely to be broken.”
