CAVE DALE

Take a walk through history, while being overlooked by Peveril Castle, built in Norman times.

From the car park, take a left upbank towards The Bulls Head pub and then your next right, taking the road with The Castle pub on your right. Follow this road straight ahead and then bear left. From here you see a brown signpost for Cave Dale. The entrance to the path is tucked away alongside Cavedale Cottage. Head through the entrance and this is where it begins.

Follow the path up through the limestone valley. There are a couple of little paths either side, where you can have a little scramble up to the top for mega views. Following the main path up through Cave Dale and eventually you come to the top of the valley and a gate. Go through here and carry straight on, always keeping the wall on your right. Keep going straight on until you see a wooden signpost, and again, keep going straight on. Eventually you then come to a lane with options of left or right. Go right. Walk along here, heading towards a farm in the distance.

Just before you reach the farm, there is a stile on the right pointing towards Castleton. Take this and head down through the fields. Its a well-trodden

path, and you will pass over five stiles/walls. After the fifth, you will see Peveril Castle in the distance. Once you reach here, follow the path along the edge of the small wood and you reach a gate taking you straight back into the streets of Castleton and you are done.

Not wheelchair or pram friendly, but definitely a walk the whole family can do. Be careful with dogs, as sheep are dotted about throughout. It’s not the biggest walk at 7km, but will take around two hours.

TRAVEL

The car park is at the main visitor centre (S33 8WN). It is £4 for 2-4 hours. If this is full, there are other car parks in the area.

REFRESHMENTS

There are so many pubs and car parks in Castleton, and toilets on the main car park. Take a picnic on dry days though, the views are worth it.
