Net zero’s the fast road to poverty...
IN REPLY to Nigel Jones, (Sentinel Letters, October 27) it is so easy sitting in our Western homes to tell African and Asian countries they should not use coal.
Many millions of people in these countries do not have electricity. This is why these countries are building hundreds of coal-fired power stations each year – to provide cheap electricity which will be affordable for their populations.
Presently, these millions of people without electricity chop down millions of trees each year to cook food. So, coal-fired power stations as they come into use will be environmentally friendly as they save millions of trees from being chopped down.
As for his statement that climate change is linked to economic growth, I cannot see how he works that one out. Since the even hotter period than today about 1,000 years ago there have been various hot and cold periods. The temperature in the Arctic today is as warm as it was in the 1930s and 40s before the drastic cooling of the 1960s. The only thing that will happen when we stop using imported coal, gas and oil will be blackouts and poverty as industry moves abroad.
The green agenda Mr Jones is selling us is absolutely not green, committing thousands to death and starvation with the cold as his solar power will not heat homes in the winter when the sun does not shine.
I suppose he supports the European Union’s directive to cut carbon emisions? The Irish government to implement this is suggesting killing 1.3 million beef cattle as part of its net zero programme and the Dutch government is proposing to confiscate 30% of food producing land.
