SEX offender Daniel Latham failed to inform police he was living in a house with a child.

The 36-year-old was convicted of exposure in October and placed on the sex offenders’ register.

That prevents him living in the same house as a child for 12 hours or more without informing the police. But on February 18 Staffordshire Police became aware he was in a relationship with a woman who had a five-year-old child.

And he had stayed at her home overnight on four occasions. Now Latham has been handed a 12 month community order with an extra 10 rehabilitation days at North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

Prosecutor Lee Stone said the woman met Latham in December and he stayed at her home on four occasions between 8pm and 8am. Mr Stone said: “The last time it happened was February 14 while her five-yearold daughter was present.

“His partner was not aware of him being a registered sex offender at this time. He failed to register he was staying at the address with a child.”

The woman ended the relationship when she discovered he was on the sex offenders’ register.

Latham, of Joseph Street, Burslem, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders’ register.

Tacarat Hussain, mitigating, said when Latham was made the subject of the order he was still suffering from the side effects of monkey dust and other drugs. Mr Hussain: “He was diagnosed with a mental health condition. He is suffering from schizophrenia.”

But he added that Latham has been doing well with probation since he was sentenced in October. Mr Hussain added: “He is engaging and showing his motivation to change.”

Magistrates were pleased that Latham has been engaging with the probation service and handed him an extra 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He was ordered to pay £185 costs and a £114 surcharge.
