‘GREAT PLACE BACK IN THE DAY’... ‘AND THE BEST CANTEEN’

PROUD pottery workers who have given decades of service to Johnson Tiles have expressed their sadness – as its Stoke-on-trent factory prepares to close for good.

Johnson Tiles was founded by Harry Johnson and the Johnson family in Cobridge in 1901, acquired its Highgate

Works HQ, in Tunstall, in 1911, and changed its name to H&R Johnson Tiles in 1979.

But Johnson Tiles is now set to outsource all of its UK manufacturing with the loss of 105 jobs. Norcros Group will continue to retain a non-manufacturing presence in Tunstall.

Now Sentinel readers have shared their memories of working at Johnson Tiles.

Sharon Bates said: “I did 29 years there and over decades most of my family worked there as that’s just the way it was back then.

“If you knew someone that needed a job you got them a job and that’s how I ended up there.

“I have some amazing memories of such good times but then lots of memories of not such good times with people losing their jobs. I hope everyone affected manages to find new beginnings and in the meantime stay strong.”

Alan Bryan said: “I worked there for 32-and-a-half years. Johnson had the best canteen ever – you could get a three-course meal for a couple of quid.”

Garry Billings said: “My dad, uncles and aunts all worked there and I worked there for 26 years. I had some great times and formed great friendships. I hope the staff will be okay.”

Paul Austin said: “I worked as an electrician in the maintenance department between 1998 and 2004 and worked with some great people. I feel sorry for the people who are losing their jobs. I really hope they find new opportunities.”

Lee Meaney said: “It was a great place back in the day. I only went on to cover somebody and ended up doing 14 years.”

Wayne Packman said: “I still have great friends who work there. They gave me a great start in life and what memories.”

Chris Aubrey said: “My first job when I finished school was at Johnson Tiles at Eastwood Hanley. It is so sad.”
