PAVEMENT PARKING IN STREET SPARKS NEIGHBOURS’ OUTCRY

They want council to create more spaces for drivers in area

FED-UP families are demanding action over pavement parking on a busy residential street.

Neighbours in Stonor Street, Cobridge, are fed up with vehicles blocking the pavements and making it difficult for disabled people and mums with pushchairs to get past.

Now they want Stokeon-trent City Council to create more parking spaces in the area.

Their appeal follows 24-hour recovery truck driver Gary Wood claiming he was unfairly targeted with a penalty charge notice in Westbourne Drive, Tunstall – despite 17 other vehicles in the ‘narrow’ street escaping the same fate.

In Cobridge, taxi driver Muhamad Zulqurnain, aged 42, said: “Cars parking on the pavement is a big problem for a disabled person. You should not park on a pavement and leave your car.

“You should not park on a pavement permanently. It is just common sense.

People should take care of their community.”

Paul Hancock, aged 60, of Austin’s corner shop, said: “Sometimes I pull on the pavement when delivering to my dad’s shop.

“It is a problem. There is plenty of land. The council should make more parking spaces.” Cameron Khan, aged 28, of Stonor Street, said: “When people come to pick their kids up from air cadets they park on the pavement all down the street and we can’t get out or in. It is once or twice a week and it is a bit of a nuisance when you can’t get in and out of your drive.” Vanessa Demeterova, aged 23, who has a baby in a pushchair, added: “It is a problem if they park stupidly. Sometimes it is a problem and it is difficult to get past. There should be more parking for people.”

Scotland last year banned pavement parking, double parking, and parking over dropped kerbs.

“But there is no law against pavement parking in England – except in London. Outside London, drivers can partially park on pavements if they are not causing an obstruction.
