Club puts fears of future behind it to enter new golden age

THE Potteries Folk Club has entered a ‘golden age of success’ – just 12 months after there were fears for its future.

The club – which has been in existence for more than 60 years – was suffering from dwindling attendances and the committee felt that it was in need of new, younger members and audiences with fresh ideas on how to change things.

That desire for change was given a major boost by a sold-out ‘Save the Potteries Folk Club’ fundraising concert last June.

It was initiated by the international touring Anglo-german folk duo of Paul Walker and Karen Pfeiffer of Eccleshall.

As well as giving up their time, their decision to waive their fee for the performance significantly cushioned the club’s bank account.

The well-promoted concert raised a lot of awareness of the club’s existence and provided funds that enabled the club to take the risk of providing a new programme for all folk-loving ages.

One of the most important decisions was using the welcoming atmosphere of the new venue in Fenton Town Hall Café, which the club has been using since autumn 2022.

The ‘shout for help’ has also attracted some new helping hands.

Musician Ben Matthews, from Stone, has volunteered to create a new, more up-to-date website and the club is now not only on Facebook, but also on Instagram.

In addition, a new voluntary press officer has been appointed who ensures that the concerts and activities are passed on to the media.

This year’s AGM had a completely different focus as the club has ‘turned its ship around’ and is now thriving.

Treasurer Jason Hill said: “The club has entered a new golden age of success, with capacity audiences filling the Fenton Town Hall Café.”

Founder member and MC Annie Morris said: “I’m very proud to still be involved in the best club. Keep music alive and let it grow and evolve. This club can do that.”

Eleven months later and one half of the Paul Walker and Karen Pfeiffer duo is returning to the club on Friday.

Karen’s all female trio Michell, Pfeiffer & Kulesh will start their debut album tour at The Potteries Folk Club.

The trio brings together the talents of award-winning singers and songwriters Odette Michell, Karen Pfeiffer and Daria Kulesh.

Tickets for this and all other events are available on Eventbrite or for some events also on the door.

The club usually meets on the second Friday of every month and is looking forward to welcoming folk royalty including Granny’s Attic, Pete Coe or Tim Edey in the coming months as well as presenting local folk talent in the summer showcases In July and August.
