The Simple Things

My day in cups of coffee Cut paper artist Rob Ryan

WE ASKED PAPER- CUTTING PRO ROB RYAN TO DESCRIBE HIS DAY IN CUPPAS

-

What’s a typical morning for you?

I get up, have a bowl of cereal – Shreddies or Weetabix – a glass of OJ and my vitamin and cholesterol pills, and then cycle from my home near Victoria in London to my studio in Bethnal Green. I aim to arrive about nine o’clock.

You must need a cuppa after that, surely?

After I’ve showered and changed out of my cycling clothes, I’ll have my first coffee of the day. If I’m first to arrive, I’ll make it, but otherwise someone will kindly make it for me.

Are you particular about how it’s made?

Not at all! How hard is it to put a teaspoon of instant coffee into a mug with some boiling water and milk? I’m not fussy about mugs, either. I’ll use any one that’s handy.

When’s your next coffee break?

I don’t have coffee breaks, I drink my cuppa whilst I work and I work straight through to lunch, when I eat and catch up with my studio team: Sarah, Daisy, Josh and my wife Lorna. We might have sushi, a sandwich or a microwave curry. Then perhaps we’ll play cards or board games and then we work on until about 5.30–6.

Why are you supporting Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning?

Because the charity does good work supporting people living with cancer. I have seen how much comfort they can bring at a very difficult time.

Worst ever beverage spillage?

Oh, whole cups of coffee over very intricate paper-cut art. It happens all the time…

Are you a dunker?

I don’t dunk but I do like something sweet with my coffee. Cake-wise, I like lemon drizzle. As for biscuits, I like Biscoff, chocolate digestives, ginger nuts, malted milk… But the biscuit I love the most isn’t made any more – Lemon Puffs!
