Some seven miles from Dedham, south of Colchester, is Beth Chatto’s garden. It’s so different from any other that you’re sure to learn something new. Beth began her clever naturalistic planting that mimics nature in the 60s and until she died earlier this year, almost 95, she lived in the family home in the grounds. Among many achievements she transformed an old car park into a gravel garden that has never been watered; a huge gum tree and drought resistant plants have made it their own. It’s fascinating to wander through and the nursery here sells many of the unusual plants, too.
