MÄRZEN BEER
A Bavarian beer, traditionally brewed in March. A 16th-century decree forbade brewing between April and September, so Märzen was made with more hops and a higher alcohol content to last the dry spell. Now the traditional beer of Oktoberfest – they’re all brewed in Munich – typically still about 1% stronger than a usual lager. SERVING NOTES Go trad and pair with roast pork or chicken and potato dumplings. Donning of dirndls, waistcoats and lederhosen optional, but encouraged.
