MÄRZEN BEER

A Bavarian beer, traditiona­lly brewed in March. A 16th-century decree forbade brewing between April and September, so Märzen was made with more hops and a higher alcohol content to last the dry spell. Now the traditiona­l beer of Oktoberfes­t – they’re all brewed in Munich – typically still about 1% stronger than a usual lager. SERVING NOTES Go trad and pair with roast pork or chicken and potato dumplings. Donning of dirndls, waistcoats and lederhosen optional, but encouraged.
