The Simple Things

History project

The 25th marks the birth of Scottish poet Robbie Burns in 1759 in Alloway, Ayrshire, and Burns’ Night suppers are held all over the UK (suddenly, we all want in on Scottish traditions when there’s whisky and buttered swede on the menu). If your front door is already looking a bit bare post Christmas, you could make a tartan wreath for Burns’ Night and extend the festivities a little longer.

1 Take a wire wreath ring (available at craft stores, haberdashers and online) and about a metre of one or more tartan fabrics.

2 Cut your fabrics into strips all about the same length (about 15-20cm is a good length).

3 Start tying the strips of fabric into attractive knots around the wires of the ring until the entire wreath is covered. Tie one longer ribbon or a piece of string to the top to allow you to hang it.
