How to forage well
Seaweed foraging is relatively straightforward. Most species are edible (though not all are tasty) and only one, featherweed, is poisonous, but it only grows in deep water.
Collect from an unpolluted source by avoiding beaches near towns, sewage pipes, runoff and industry. Check the latest reports on bathingwater quality before you go. In England, the Environment Agency monitors this and publishes the information on its website; in Scotland it’s SEPA, Wales NRW and Northern Ireland DAERA.
Basic foraging rules apply – never uproot a plant and take only what you need for your personal use
(you mustn’t sell it on to anyone). Also, spread your picking around, taking a little here and there rather than clearing one spot entirely. To avoid damaging the plant, use scissors, don’t tear it, and don’t cut near the root; leave a third of its length so it can grow back.
