The Simple Things

My day in cups of tea

We have a natter with Birmingham-based potter Katie Robbins and ask her to tell us all about how she spends her day in cuppas.

- KATIE ROBBINS is a potter who works from her garden studio in Birmingham. Visit ktrobbinsceramics.com or follow her on Instagram: @ceramicmagpie.

Morning! Where do you like to have your first cuppa?

On the sofa, with Waffles the spaniel, as I check my phone. My other half usually makes it for me.

Nice work. What’s next?

I've a garden studio, so my commute isn’t far! Most mornings I’ll walk the dog first, go for a run, or practice yoga.

How did you become a potter?

I had a career break from marketing after having my children. I’d always loved pottery, taking lots of classes. At an open exhibition, I sold some pieces, which gave me confidence. I love the meditative nature of creating work that'll be cherished. Time for elevenses yet?

My work is physically demanding so I’m more than ready! I have tea, which I like on the weak and milky side, in a travel cup to sup in the studio (mugs aren't great because of the dust) and I’ll often raid the tin for a home-baked treat, like spiced gingerbread biscuits. Who do you like to share a cuppa with?

I try and see my best friend every few weeks: quite often a walk followed by a cuppa and something sweet. Talking of food, what would you like for lunch?

I like something warm – soup most days. After lunch, my productivity decreases, so I might plan in some less taxing admin or activities for my body and mind. How important is tea to your day?

If lockdown has taught me one thing, it’s to make the most of everyday pleasures, like a nice cuppa.

When do you down tools for the day?

I’m trying to finish work earlier otherwise I’m a zombie by the end of the week. I’m not good at switching off. So, time for one last cuppa?

Something from the Pukka night time range – back on the sofa while my partner massages my feet.
