The Simple Things

SPRING BEACH GAMES

Even if the sun isn’t shining, there’s plenty you can do on the sand to stay warm

-

Collect driftwood and any other treasures washed up by the sea to create works of art that will delight until the tide comes in

DRIFTWOOD ART

Search the shoreline for washed up driftwood, then use it to create pictures on the sand – perhaps with shells and seaweed. Bring a penknife and you can have a go at carving your own shapes out of any wood that you find.

KITE FLYING

Bring a kite to the beach and send it soaring! With space, sea breezes and soft sand, just in case you trip, there are few better places to go fly a kite.

GEOCACHING

Check to see if any treasure has been left by other explorers on the beach by downloading a Geocaching app and seeing if there are any caches hidden near you.

FRISBEE GOLF

Take a few frisbees and get golfing, with a game that can be played whatever the weather. Similar to disc golf, this is a simpler version. Simply mark out your holes (they can be towels, stones or even your picnic hamper), and whoever gets their disc closest to it in the smallest number of throws wins!

STONE SKIMMING

Finding the smoothest, flattest stone on the beach and getting it to bounce off the water is one of the oldest and most satisfying games to play next to any body of water – sink or skim! Experiments have shown that the best size stone to use is around 9-10cm and, when you release it, aim for around a 20° angle between your throw and the water, and a flat landing that's at least 2m away from you*.
