Savvy spinach

It sounds totally sci-fi, but scientists at MIT in the US have trained spinach to send emails. When the spinach roots detect nitroaromatics, often used in explosives, the plants emit a signal, which is read by an infrared camera and triggers an email. This could be used to warn about explosives and soil pollution.
