The Simple Things

A vintage day out

PACK UP A PICNIC AND HEAD TO AN OUTDOOR FLEA- MARKET TO HUNT FOR TREASURE AND CATCH UP WITH FRIENDS

- Recipes and styling: LOUISE GORROD Photography: EMMA CROMAN

Rummaging through other people’s junk to find items you’ll treasure is a fantastic way to spend a day, but throw in friends and a picnic hamper and you’ve struck gold. After hunting out bargains* and having a good haggle, find a spot to lay out some blankets then plonk yourself down to admire your magpie-like skills and enjoy a grown-up picnic (additional sausage rolls or bags of crisps very much optional). From well-packed wraps, and crispy pastries filled with creamy feta to a rocky road for adults and a refreshing strawberry and mint shrub (although a bottle of wine never goes amiss, either). Surprisingly quick and easy to make, these dishes can be prepped beforehand for a stylish but simple menu, leaving you more time to sharpen those elbows for when you spot something, or just to unwind on a blanket and watch the market-goers bustle by. »
