HEADING OFF TO SEE FAMILY OR GOING ON HOLIDAY ( AT LAST)? TRY THESE ALTERNATIVE MOTORWAY STOPS, AS RECOMMENDED BY THE SIMPLE THINGS’ READERS

-

When you’ve got a long drive, there’s nothing more dispiriting than stopping at a motorway services for a lacklustre meal and nothing to see or do that makes it feel like a refreshing break. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We asked you to tell us where you prefer to stop and what makes them a good find. Some were well known, some are local gems, but all offer inspiration, entertainment or interest. Whether you’re looking for a farm shop to stock up at or somewhere to buy a last-minute gift, a café for a tea break or a pub for a proper meal, our readers have found them, no more than a few miles off Britain’s major motorways and long-distance A roads. And they’ve also suggested parks, gardens and places to walk and explore, so you, the kids and the dog can also stretch your legs. This is not a complete guide to every major road (for that, try The Extra Mile: Delicious Alternatives to Motorway Services by Laura Collacott and Alastair Sawday, Printslinger) but highlights some common routes. All are expected to reopen in line with guidelines for eating outside and inside, but please check websites and social media for exact opening hours.
