Loved by butterflies and gardeners alike, lilacs are a spring finale, with their vibrant colour and heady scent that fill the garden before roses come into bloom and grab all the glory. Lilac bushes are easy to grow and can live for more than 100 years, but despite the advancing age of some, purple lilacs symbolise first love while white varieties are said to stand for youthful innocence. If you have a bush in your garden there should be plenty of flowers to distribute this month, so you can not only bring the sweet scent indoors, but share with friends, too.
