My day in cups of tea
We asked refill shop owner and vegan hair product pro Hairy Jayne Rutland to tell us all about how she spends her day in cuppas
Morning! Where do you like to take your first cuppa? In bed, brought by my husband Karl. He pretty much starts the day saying, “Tea and biscuits,” meaning tea for me and breakfast for our rescue terrier, Graham. And how do you like your tea?
I love a builder’s, no sugar, with oat milk in my favourite Pantone mugs. Tell us a bit about where you are Our home is an ex-bakery in Bristol. We run a zero-waste refill shop in the front. I also make hair products there and Karl (a sound designer) has built his own basement music studio. What’s first on the work list?
We open the shop at 10am and work until 2pm, refilling customers’ bottles and serving zero-waste products. Shop hours over, what’s next? Lunch – cheese on sourdough with kimchi is the go-to. Then we take Graham for a walk. And what does the afternoon hold?
That’s when I run Hairy Jayne, making vegan hair care products. I’m either on the laptop or head down, mixing ingredients. My shampoo bars are the most popular. How did you end up doing what you do now?
I was a hairdresser and started playing with argan oil and essential oils as a hair treatment. It spiralled from there. We make everything as sustainably as possible. Busy lady! How do you like to take a break?
I listen to guided meditations with a herbal cuppa. Or play ball with Graham, he’s always up for a game. When do you aim to down tools for the day?
7pm, but after dinner the laptop invariably comes out... When do you really finish for the day?
It’s one last cuppa, either watching TV or making something – over lockdown I did everything from patchwork and tie dyeing to making earrings! A soak with bath salts is also nice to help me switch off.
