1. Satin stitch (Desert Dunes and Notebook Cover)

Bring the needle up on the left, down on the right and back up on the left, working stitches close together. Keep stitching in this way, under and over, so that the back of the work looks the same as the front. To maintain an even tension, always take the needle out at the back, then back in at the front in two steps rather than one motion.

2. Long and short stitch

(Notebook Cover)

Work alternate long and short stitches for the first row – the short stitches should be half the length of the long ones. Start from the back bringing the needle up then down for the second stitch, up for the third and so on. Subsequent rows are worked with stitches the same length as the first row. 3. Stem stitch (Notebook Cover)

Stem stitch creates a solid raised line with a textured appearance. It can be used for any shape, especially curved lines. Bring the needle up just above the design line for the first stitch, down for the second below the line, and back up above the line. Continue in this way, always working back on yourself.
