My day in cups of tea
We enjoy a cuppa with ceramicist and printmaker Kate Russell of Skratch Studio and a chat about her love of Welsh folk art and Yorkshire tea
Morning! When do you enjoy your first cuppa? Usually after the school run and dog walk. I sit down with a strong tea before starting work at about 10am. Tell us a bit about where you work
I live in the Vale of Glamorgan. We converted the garage of our home into my studio, so I’ve a super short commute: ideal for juggling childcare and a business. Now fill us in on your business
I’m a ceramicist and printmaker. Some weeks I make new pieces, some are spent decorating them, and others are taken up by photography, admin and packing orders.
How did you get into that?
I took a pottery course and got hooked on making ceramics with a carved surface. I posted some early pieces on Instagram and enough people showed an interest that I decided to try it as a business. It’s an endlessly satisfying process, turning mud into a solid object that could last forever! Let’s make you a solid cuppa. What do you fancy? Yorkshire Gold, served strong and fairly milky. In the afternoon, I might switch to Earl Grey.
You’re a ceramicist, you must have a favourite mug? The ones I reach for most often are from Glosters Pottery and Laura Lane Ceramics.
Who are your tea-drinking companions of choice?
I try to meet friends regularly. I enjoy working on my own, but I’d go crazy without regular chats over a brew. When do you finish work for the day?
Sometimes when it’s time to collect my kids. But when I’m busier, I’ll work into the evening. I’m a night owl, so don’t mind burning the midnight oil when needed. How do you like to relax with a cuppa?
Usually scrolling Instagram. I like to knit as well, but I get so absorbed that I forget to drink my tea!
