Stars including Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster in Coronation Street), Jamie Borthwick (Jay Mitchell in EastEnders) and Stephanie Davis (Sinead O’Connor from Hollyoaks), discuss what it’s like to have your life turned upside down by landing a role in a soap as a child actor.

Russell Davies is in conversati­on with guitarist Hank Marvin, best known for his work with the musical group The Shadows. Alongside huge success with the band and performing at the Eurovision Song Contest, Hank also formed the group Marvin, Welch & Farrar and pursued a solo career over the last 50 years in the music business, inspiring the likes of Mark Knopfler and David Bowie along the way.

With all things Scottish very much in the air this year, writer, comedian and now ex-pat, A. L. Kennedy, reflects on what Scottishne­ss means to her in a new series of The Essay. Today she looks at tartan, the kilt and a sense of identity. Other topics throughout the week include a good sense of humour, morality and misery – is dourness necessaril­y such a bad thing? And finally, the language of Scotland and Scotland’s many hidden identities.

For most of us, karaoke is something to liven up a night out with friends, but some people take it pretty seriously. Katie Puckrik visits Portland, Oregon. She finds, a KJ (karaoke jockey) who has turned it into a competitiv­e sport, a group doing karaoke with puppets and performers who make a point of never singing the same song twice.
