Shed of the Year

- Alan Carr: Summer Special Northern Soul: Living for the Weekend

Channel 4, 8pm

One of the most unusual presents I’ve ever received was when my family presented me with the parts for a garden shed. Sadly my limited DIY skills meant that it fell down a few years later. The owners of Britain’s best sheds wouldn’t let such a fate befall their pride and joy. Unlike me, these folk don’t just store the mower and some garden tools in the sheds. These are sheds that have become observatories, games rooms and bars. Sheds, but not as most of us know them. Presented by George Clarke (below).

The Million Pound Drop

Channel 4, 8pm

The first of a double dose of Alan Carr this evening as he teams up with Radio1’s Nick Grimshaw. As ever, the aim is to deal with seven killer questions or see £1 million disappear from view. Naturally, being a celebrity special, it’s all for charity. Davina McCall hosts.

Channel 4, 9pm

Traditionally chat show hosts take a break from our screens in summer, but Alan Carr clearly doesn’t need as much of a break as some. He’s been persuaded to squeeze in a seasonal special of his show. Miranda Hart’s presence will guarantee a few laughs, but it will be interesting to see what Hollywood star Vin Diesel and hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks bring to the mix. The stars of the new Inbetweeners movie also drop by.

BBC4, 9.30pm

Every generation finds a style of music that it regards as its own. For many in the 1970s that meant Northern Soul, a music and dance movement that had its heartland in the north of England. Then there was the fashion – baggy trousers, turn-ups and brown shoes. The likes of Pete Waterman, Peter Stringfellow and Marc Almond recall younger days and explain what the fuss was about.
