‘Fluffy’ Libby delves into the darkness
FORMER River City star Libby McArthur is delving into the mysterious death of an SNP activist for her latest project.
Libby, who played cafe owner Gina Rossi in the Scottish soap for 11 years, is directing a play based on Willie MacRae, who was found dead in his car in April, 1985.
Although a world away from her TV image, Libby says the political drama is more in keeping with her interests.
“People think of me as fluffy but it’s an artist’s job to go to dark places,” she said.
But Libby admits she still pines for Gina.
“I adored her and when I watch River City I miss her,” she continued.
“When people write drama the good people end up as victims.
“I think there was a whole other side to Gina that didn’t come out and I used to say they should have her steal a purse or something.”
Now Libby is getting the chance to delve into the darker recesses as director of 3000 Trees.
It’s based on the story of MacRae, a lawyer and anti- nuclear campaigner who was on his way to Ross- shire when he was found slumped in his car at the side of the road. It was only later a bullet hole was spotted in his head.
His death was ruled as suicide, but many people have disputed that verdict and called for a Fatal Accident Inquiry.
“The central character, Willie McKay, is fictional but we’re not hiding the fact it’s about Willie MacRae,” Libby admitted.
She believes the play is very timely, coming just weeks before the referendum.
“I’ve voted Labour all my life, but I’m now determined to influence people to vote Yes,” she said.
“All of Britain is suffering from London- centeredness and I want a new way of looking at life.”
3000 Trees is at the Fringe from Aug 1- 24 at 7.15pm, Gryphon Venues. AFTER the failure of her movie Shanghai Surprise, Madonna wanted to star in another successful comedy, like Desperately Seeking Susan had been.
The movie, Who’s That Girl, flopped at the box office.
It was notable for featuring a live cougar – which escaped on to the streets of New York and halted filming.
At least it spawned the title track Who’s That Girl, DONNA SUMMER was the ultimate disco diva, and one of her most iconic songs was the trippy dance track I Feel Love. which reached No 1 this week in 1987.
