Recycle and re-invent

-

THIS Thursday sees the launch of Drop Down Pop Up in Glasgow’s Merchant City – an exciting and unique new pop up shopping experience from new eco-design collective, Refashion Glasgow.

It’s so in fashion with TV programmes and magazines all commenting on the good in recycling!

In fact, the first programme I did for BBC1 was Change That where we looked at reusing and revitalising old pieces of furniture.

Along with Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, Linda Barker, Anna Ryder Richardson and Handy Andy, we travelled the UK inspiring all to recycle and re-invent!

This is an event hosted in a former shipping container, which will be dropped down on Hutcheson Street on July 24 until August 3.

The pop up shop is the brainchild of ethical fashion retailer Victoria McQuillan of Think Boutique, Claire Kennedy of lifestyle retailer Rapa Nui Gallery, Niki Taylor of The Top Project, Italian designer Annalisa Simonella of allenomis and designer Aimee Kent.

The group, all Glasgow based, will promote the creative hub of ethical design businesses growing in the city and raise awareness of style-led ethical and sustainable design.

Drop Down Pop Up will sell a mix of ethically and sustainably- sourced fashion, art, homeware and lifestyle products from Rapa Nui Gallery, The Top Project, Think Boutique and allenomis. Many products are exclusive.

Rapa Nui Gallery offers a collection of homeware, gifts and art, which are bright and eye-catching with a quirky edge.

Enjoy a range of upcycled, Fairtrade and organic clothing and accessories featuring bright pops of colour, vintage inspired shapes and one-off designs from Think Boutique.

Top Project will be showcasing its own range of unique, eyecatching silk tops and luxurious silk vintage blouses as well as a range of work from emerging print designers and illustrators. allenomis creates a range of clothing in futuristic shapes and gorgeous fabrics which are both glamorous and practical.

The pop up will also host a programme of events including a live mannequin show, a kids’ upcycling art workshop, a clothes repair café, lino and block printing workshop and a fashion clothes swap.

Embracing the Commonwealth Games and team spirit, the pop up will include an on-going creation of a Games-themed mosaic panel made from recycled magazines.

The repurposed shipping container housing the shop measures a dinky 20ft x 8ft and, in keeping with the recycling ethos, will feature pared back recycled newspaper decor with neon pops of colour.

All in all a great place to get our recycling minds together!
