Horror as entire families are killed in plane attack

TWO entire British families were killed in the Ukraine plane attack.

John Allen, 44, his Dutch wife Sandra and their three young sons Christopher, Julian and Ian, were on their way to a dream holiday in I ndonesia when the Air Malaysia flight was downed.

Another Brit, Andrew Hoare, 59, also died alongside his Dutch wife and their two sons Friso, 12, and Jasper, 14.

TRIBUTES poured in last night for the 10 Brits who were killed when a Malaysia Airlines flight was gunned down over Ukraine.

Officials named all the British victims yesterday and the list tragically included two entire families.

Among them was British lawyer John Allen, his Dutch wife Sandra and their three young sons Christopher, Julian and Ian, who were all killed when a surface- to- air missile struck flight MH17 on Thursday.

The 44-year-old was one of the top lawyers in the Netherlands and was described as a “much-loved colleague” by his friends at international law firm NautaDutilh.

His children weren’t counted as being among the 10 British victims because they had Dutch passports.

Last night, John’s sister, artist Wonder Allen-Smith, wrote on Facebook: “I lost my whole family, my brilliant brother and his beautiful wife and three magnificent children in the MH17 airplane crash.”

Another British victim was Somerset banker Andrew Hoare, 59, who perished along with his Dutch wife and their two sons Friso, 12 and Jasper, 14, who were also travelling on Dutch passports.

At least 80 of the 298 victims were children.

Drilling technician Stephen Anderson, 44, who lived in Malaysia, was the only Scot killed.

The former RAF search and rescue co-ordinator at Lossiemouth moved to Penang in Malaysia four years ago with his second wife, Joanna, 37.

Last night the father-of-one’s parents, Leslie and Rosalind, who live in Daviot near Inverness, were too upset to talk. His wife Joanna was understood to be travelling back to Scotland to be with her family.

It is thought his first wife, Colinne, and daughter Jordan, 21, still live in Lossiemouth.

A friend, who did not want to be named but said he had worked with Stephen, said: “I was out in Malaysia last year to visit him and his wife Joanna and he was very happy.

“I’ve been trying to contact Joanna but with no success. She will be devastated.”

Posting on Twitter, Anna H wrote: “Thoughts and prayers to a beautiful fr i end whose husband was on flight #MH17.

“A top guy who will be tr uly missed by all your RAF family.”

Stephen, who went to Inverness Royal Academy, joined the RAF after leaving college.

He was a mechanical trade engineer at RAF Marham for five years before returning north to RAF Lossiemouth.

He married Joanna in 2003 and left the RAF in 2010 to join Maersk Drilling as a hydraulic technician.

A fitness fanatic, he enjoyed mountain biking, running, seven-a-side football and was an avid Rangers fan. He also played the bagpipes.

Yesterday First Minister Alex Salmond was among those who offered their condolences to his family.

He said: “On behalf of the Scottish Government and the people of Scotland, I extend my condolences to the family, and to the families of all of the victims who have died in this horrific event.”

Among the other nine British victims were Newcastle United fans John Alder, 63, and Liam Sweeney, 28.

The pair were on their way to see the club’s preseason tour of New Zealand. Other doomed passengers included former BBC man Glenn Thomas. The 49- year- old from Blackpool was on his way to the International Aids Society summit in Australia.

The former headteacher of victim Richard Mayne, from Leicestershire, paid tribute to the 20-year-old.

John Wood, from the Dixie Grammar School in Nuneaton, said:“Richard was an extremely pleasant and thoughtful young man.”

The family of Robert Ayley, 28, originally from Guildford but living in New Zealand, said the father- of- two “touched many lives”.

On Facebook his wife Sharlene wrote: “Rob was our everything.”

Andrew Hoare was named as the final British victim.

There were also 193 victims from the Netherlands, 43 from Malaysia, including 15 crew and two children and another 27 from Australia.

The dead also include 12 from Indonesia four people from Germany, four from Belgium, three from the Philippines plus a Canadian and a New Zealander.
