It’s looking Good for Gosden

-

NOT for the first time, John Gosden’s Kingman will be the centrepiece of all the multiple bets for Glorious Goodwood, which starts onTuesday.

Already the winner of the Irish 2000GuineasatTheCurragh, and Royal Ascot’s St. James’s Palace Stakes, John Gosden’s Invincible Spirit colt will take some beating.

He’scertainlybeenonthepunter’s side, with the exception of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, where the race became scrappy.

Since then, there was been the five-length Group 1 romp in Ireland, followedbyabreathtaking performanceatRoyalAscot, when he flew past Night OfThunder, his Newmarket conqueror.

Nothingsucceedslikeacceleration, and Kingman’s turn of foot for James Doyle had to be seen to be believed.

Hisriderhadtheconfidencetosit in the last two, was still sixth at the top of the straight and didn’t press thebuttonuntilthefurlongpole.

Wednesday’s Group 1 Sussex Stakes is an obvious next stop for Khalid Abdullah’s champion, wherethefour-year-oldToronado might pose the biggest threat.

Gosden might be on the mark ontheopeningday, whenhisfiveyear-old Gregorian heads for the Lennox Stakes.

This son of Clodovil is versatile trip-wise. A nine-furlong winner at Epsom last May, he hadd the speed to run an amazing race in the six-furlong July Cup at Newmarket.

Hewasobligedtoracedownthe stands side with five other rivals, found trouble in running just over a furlong out, but still ran on to leadthatgroup, behindtwobetterdrawn rivals on the other side.

Oneofthebiggestbettingheats of the week will be Friday’s Betfred Mile, but Goldolphin have a runner of interest in the so far lightly-raced GoldenTown.

Getting the three- year- old allowance, this gelding only incurs a 3lb penalty for that success, in an event that had all the top yards represented.

GOODWOOD SELECTIONS NAP DOUBLE TREBLE

With four poles and four wins to his name at the Hungaroring in seven attempts, Hamilton was on course for top spot on the grid again after setting the fastest time in all three practice sessions.

But come the start of qualifying a fuel leak saw Hamilton’s Mercedes bursting into flames, resulting in him trundling to a halt in the pit lane.

As Hamilton looked on with marshals dousing the fire, he shook his head disconsolately and slapped the palm of his hand against a barrier before trudging away.

After a right-front brake disc failure last Saturday at Hockenheim ahead of the German Grand Prix pitched Hamilton into a 30g shunt into a barrier, it has been a week to forget for the Briton.

Explaining the circumstances of his latest misfortune, Hamilton said:
