Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past

- Great Expectations Infamous The Inbetweeners

More4, 9pm

Great Expectations isn’t the only Charles Dickens inspired movie of the week, although this one – very loosely based on A Christmas Carol – will stand the test of time only for being recalled as the film after which Matthew McConaughey decided he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor (and not to do films like this anymore). Jennifer Garner also stars.

Film4, 2.45pm

There have been many adaptations of Charles Dickens’ famous novel but David Lean’s 1946 version continues to stand the test of time. Following an unnerving encounter with an escaped convict, orphaned boy Pip (played by John Mills) learns how to become a gentleman thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Alec Guinness – in his first major screen role – appears as Herbert Pocket.

BBC2, 11.05pm (BBC2 Scotland, 12.05am)

Toby Jones, Sandra Bullock and Daniel Craig star in this biographical drama of American journalist Truman Capote’s research into the murder of a Kansas family that would form the basis for his “non-fiction novel” In Cold Blood. This was one of two films released inside 12 months about the life of the writer and paled in comparison with the Oscar-winning Capote.

Channel 4, 9pm

When first broadcast on E4 I cocked a snook at The Inbetweeners, believing that as students were raving about it on social media – and if it wasn’t good enough for Channel 4 – I was unlikely to find much aimed at me in its comedy. But though it can be bawdy, and this spin-off movie particularly so, the premise of four lads trying to survive the social perils of sixth form is an ageless struggle.
