Moyes told Vida will cost £10 million

SUNDERLAND have been told they must pay £10 million for Dynamo Kiev defender Domagoj Vida after their £6 million bid was rejected.

The Croatia star, 27, can play right-back or centre-back and figured in three of his country’s four games at Euro 2016 as they reached the round of 16 before losing to tournament winners Portugal after extra-time.

Sunderland did business with Ukrainian champions Dynamo last summer when former boss Dick Advocaat signed Holland winger Jeremain Lens for £9 million.

New manager David Moyes made a transfer breakthrough late on Friday when Senegal centre-back Papy Djilobodji joined from Chelsea for £8 million on a fouryear deal to become Sunderland’s first summer signing.

Djilobodji played in only one game for the Blues before being loaned in January to Werder Bremen, where his 88th-minute winner on the final day of the season secured their Bundesliga survival.

Jose Mourinho famously admitted that Djilobodji was not his choice when he arrived at Chelsea from Nantes in a £3 million deal on the transfer deadline last September. His sole appearance was as a late substitute in a Capital One Cup game at Walsall.

But, like Vida, Djilobodji offers Sunderland versatility, as he can also operate as a defensive midfielder.

Djilobodji revealed a personal call from Moyes persuaded him to move to the Stadium of Light.

He said: “I am so happy to join Sunderland and I believe we are going to do something this season. The coach called me and said he wanted me to come to work with him, and I was so delighted.’’

Meanwhile, Moyes – closing in on a deal for Rubin Kazan midfielder Yann M’Vila – watched his side draw 1-1 away to Borussia Dortmund on Friday in their final pre-season game, defender Lamine Kone equalising after Nuri Sahin opened the scoring.
