Moyesto boost Black Cats squad
STEVEN PIENAAR will be given another week to win a contract with Sunderland.
New boss David Moyes twice signed the 34-year-old South Africa midfielder, who has been training with the Black Cats for a fortnight, when he was in charge of Everton.
Moyes, who has lost midfielder Seb Larsson for six months after knee surgery, said: “Steven is still here and has done very well.
“He’s very good on the ball, and doesn’t give possession away too often. He’s a tidy player.’’
Moyes’ numbers are set to be cut further with Scotland midfielder Liam Bridcutt, 27, nearing a permanent move to Leeds after being on loan there last season.
Moyes, however, hopes a deal can be agreed for Rubin Kazan’s £5millionrated midfielder Yann M’Vila, 26, who was on loan last term.
Meanwhile, Moyes has tipped 17-year-old Sunderland striker Joel Asoro to “wow’’ Wearside.
The Swedish youth international made an impact on his first start for the Black Cats in pre-season.
Asoro, 17, scored one and made another in a 3-2 win in France over Dijon, and Moyes admitted: “If that boy keeps playing like that, I’d have no qualms about putting him in the team.
“He contributed in terms of his ability to hold the ball up and his will to win.”
