Peach of a plan to beat Russian ban

-

SMUGGLERS worked under cover of darkness to improve a country road to make it easier to transport their goods – under the noses of authorities.

The contraband being moved isn’t drugs – it’s fruit!

Ever since Russia announced a ban on food imports from the European Union last year in retaliation to a trade embargo over the annexation of Crimea, truckloads of EU fruit are being brought into the country from Belarus.

Earlier this month, customs officers uncovered a convoy of nine lorries packed with 175 tonnes of Greek and Polish fruit worth £154,000.

They’re going to continue having their work cut out after a gravel track – previously only of use to a horse and cart – was widened and improved.

It sounds like someone carried out the pear-fect plan!
