Innuendos? It’s innocent fun, says GBBO Jane

-

GREAT British Bake Off hopeful Jane Beedle says the sauciest-ever series is a shock to the bakers.

While the show has always had a reputation for a cheeky double entendre, fans reckon the naughty comments have been ramped up this year.

But garden designer Jane, 61, admits it’s a surprise to the contestants when they see the programme.

“I do love a bit of innuendo,” says Kent-based Jane. “The hilarious things the bakers say are all the more amusing because they are said totally innocently. It is only once we see ourselves on TV that we realise what was said.

“Who can forget Kate talking about her love for a certain type of apple?”

Last Wednesday’s episode saw judge Paul Hollywood in particularly scathing form, labelling one creation as being like wallpaper paste.

And Jane, whose sensible, no-nonsense approach has won over viewers, says he’s as scary as he appears on screen.

“I never got used to the Paul Hollywood icy gaze,” she admits.

“He could reduce me to a heap of insecurities with just one look. It’s ridiculous for a woman of my age.

“It was like being outside the headmistress’s office all over again.”

The series has been another ratings smash, with viewing figures even topping last year’s amazing numbers.

That’s led to recognition in the street for Jane and invites to Bake Off parties each Wednesday, always turned down so she can watch at home with her daughter while her son watches at university.

Seeing herself on screen is something she’s still trying to get used to.

“I don’t much like watching myself on television,” she adds.

“Do I really pull those funny faces? I have been compared to a chicken from Chicken Run and to Jay from The Inbetweeners.

“My kids think it is hilarious.”

The Great British Bake Off, BBC One, Wednesday, 8pm.
