Eleanor is a red-hot hit in Poldark

- By Bill Gibb

POLDARK star Eleanor Tomlinson says she’s definitely red-dy for her role as heroine Demelza.

Eleanor, 24, is always eyecatching on screen thanks to her character’s gorgeous red hair.

“I love it,” admits Eleanor. “I’ve dyed my hair every colour under the sun but I think this is my favourite.

“I’ll definitely keep it. I feel like it is strong and I gain a certain confidence by having it and I like that.”

There’s period drama at the double on Sunday evenings at the moment with BBC 1’s Poldark now going head-to-head with ITV’s Victoria.

It’s meant plenty of work for the costume departments on both series. And Eleanor says having the right look and feel is vital.

“I think we’re all in corsets this year which makes you stand correctly.

“Although they may not be so comfortable, it is an image and it works so well. You hold yourself differently.

“As soon as the costume goes on, I feel like I become the character.

“She is never a lady really and so all her clothes need to be very practical.

“They have no money, so she has nothing new.

“You see the same outfits again because she lives and dies in the same clothes and I was quite adamant about that.

“The costume designer was fantastic in creating that realistic image for Demelza.”

Eleanor and star Aiden Turner attended a premiere of the first episode in St Austell last Sunday.

And Eleanor has worked with a voice coach to ensure her accent’s spot-on.

“With Cornwall and the Cornish people being so much at the heart of this series, I’m desperate to do them proud,” she adds.

“The accent is scary because I want to get it right for them.” Poldark, BBC 1, tonight,

9pm.
