SOME player-caddie relationships are just a natural fit.
Bernhard Langer and Pete Coleman. Phil Mickelson and Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay. So it was with Sandy Lyle and Dave Musgrove. Dave will rightly be remembered as one of the great caddies. It was no surprise that Sandy played his best golf in partnership with Dave, winning The Open, The Masters and the Players Championship. Dave was one of those few caddies who really made a difference. He was on the bag when Seve Ballesteros won The Open in 1979 and Lee Janzen collected the US Open in 1998. To carry the bag for three different Major winners shows what a good job he did.
He caddied for me a few times, and I knew him well. Like me, he was a great collector of old teaching books and was a true aficionado of golf.
