Moving from left is all right by Kieran

KIERAN TIERNEY is willing to step in at right-back for Scotland.

There is no natural right-sided full-back for the clashes with Canada and Slovenia, but we’re rich with talent on the other flank.

Celtic star Tierney, Hull City’s Andy Robertson and Rangers’ Lee Wallace are all vying for a start on the left of Scotland’s defence.

Bhoys legend Danny McGrain famously played at left-back on many occasions for Scotland, despite occupying the right-back slot for the Parkhead club.

Now Tierney is ready to follow in his famous footsteps.

“Full-back is a position where you can switch sides. We saw that with Adam Matthews at Celtic a few years ago,” he said. “It’s not the worst thing. You’re still playing and you’re still playing full-back.

“I’d honestly play anywhere on the park. I don’t mind at all – I just need to start working on my right foot!

“I played at right-back in a Nike tournament with the Celtic Under15s down in England and we won it.

“You just need to run down the line, cut in and shoot. But if the guy shows you down the line, you’ve not got much chance!”

Playing at right-back for Scotland would be yet another huge moment for Tierney.

The last year-and-a-half has been full of them.

Just 16 months ago the 19-yearold was playing in front of two men and a dog for Scotland Under-19s at a tournament in Limerick.

Oli Burke was a team-mate. At the time, both were unknowns. Now they are stars.

And the Celtic man, who remains in touch with RB Leipzig’s Burke, is grateful to have been given the chance to shine.

“I remember Limerick. It was just brutal,” Tierney recalls.

“I remember the hotel and the food was so bad, we had chocolate for our pre-match meal one day!

“Me and Oli have done well after being given the chance by our managers.

“We’re both grateful for that, and I have been involved in so many big games.

“I did miss a few big ones too when I was injured, so hopefully I can make up for it in the coming weeks.”
