THE CHAMPIONSHIP

-

MORTON gaffer Jim Duffy was philosophical as his team claimed a massive three points at the Falkirk Stadium yesterday.

He said: “This is a notoriously difficult place to get a result. I don’t think we were at our best, especially in the first half, but we knuckled down and we were organised.

“We had to improve in the second half and we did that.

“We would have happily taken a point today so to get the three points is a bonus.”

The first half was a cagey affair as both teams cancelled each other out with identical formations.

The only real chances of note falling to Morton’s Thomas O’Ware and Falkirk’s John Baird as the sides went in level.

The second half appeared to be heading the same way until the game sprung into life with 10 minutes remaining.

Aidan Nesbitt galloped free down the left hand side and his cross to the back post found Kudus Oyenuga. The substitute’s looping header cleared Danny Rogers and found the back of the net to send the visiting fans into delirium.

This joy was almost shortlived as straight from kick off Falkirk broke up the park with a deep cross finding Nathan Austin onrushing, his header looked goal bound only for it to come agonisingly back off the inside of the post.

Falkirk went pushing for an equaliser with Bob McHugh spurning the Bairns’ best two chances when he could have scored.

Oyenuga then wasted a glorious chance in injury time rushing clear but he could not find a finish.

The result leaves Morton seven behind leaders Hibs and with a game in hand and two games left against the Easter Road side. Perhaps the title race is not over yet.
