Guardiola: ‘Win the Treble?

- By John Barrett sport@sundaypost.com

Pep Guardiola has debunked the idea that it’s not possible for an English club to win the Champions League and the Premier League because domestic football is too competitive.

However, he all but rules out the possibility of the sort of European CupLeague and domestic cup Treble he won in 2009 at Barcelona and was last achieved by an English club when Sir Alex Ferguson did it with Manchester United in 1999.

“I don’t believe in the idea that it’s the style of the Premier League that stops English teams winning the Champions League,” he says.

“I believe that when you play better, you win the games.

“It’s nothing to do with the intensity of the League.

“My feeling is that all five teams from English football will go through to the last 16. I think that is the first real good step.

“We are there, Tottenham are there, United are nearly there, Liverpool will be there and Chelsea, OK the last two results were not good but I think they will be there.

“That’s the best news when comparing to previous years for English football.

“We will see but if there are five teams there, obviously there is more chance to win the Champions League and maybe Doubles and even Trebles.

“But to win the Treble is an exceptional situation. Barcelona did it twice. United did it. Inter Milan with Jose Mourinho. Celtic a long time ago.

“Bayern Munich did it under Jupp Heynckes but they have won only one
