Britain’s streets are paved with rather strange names

like many others I’m sure, live on a road called King Street.

Is it one of the most common street names? – T.

Not really, as it is only the 28th most common street name in the country.

Top of the list is High Street, with 5410 examples.

Second is Station Road, with 3811 examples and third, with 2704, is Main Street.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of Park Road, Church Road, Church Street, London Road, Victoria Road, Green Lane and Manor Road.

At the other end of the scale, Britain does have some unique - and often rather silly or rude streets.

In Rye there is Dumb Woman’s Lane. Two theories exist as to why it has such a name, one being that a woman who couldn’t talk once lived there. The other, more gruesome idea is that the road was a route for smugglers in the Middle Ages. To prevent a woman who lived there from informing the authorities, smugglers cut her tongue out. On a lighter note, Spike Milligan once lived there.

There is a Needless Alley in Birmingham, Malvern has a Hornyold Road, and a sign in Carters Lane, Hitchin, boasts that it was “Formerly known as Wibbly Wobbly Lane”.

Back on the gruesome theme, there are a few Cut Throat Lanes in Britain, but Brighton has a much nicer place name in Tidy Street.

But Traverse City, Michigan, USA, has a place I’m happy to avois, namely Psycho Path!
