MP: Catholic schools must be discussed
A debate should take place on the future of Scotland’s state-funded Catholic schools, SNP MP Mhairi Black has said.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said her government is an “unequivocal supporter” of Catholic schools.
But Ms Black, who represents Paisley and Renfrewshire South, said her “personal view” is that a discussion is needed on whether they should continue to operate.
Speaking at an Edinburgh Fringe event yesterday, the she said her own experience of as a gay woman at a Catholic school was “damaging”.
She explained: “Even just when I am thinking of some of the damage that was done to me in an LGBT sense, growing up, it’s something that I wouldn’t want any other child to ever have to suffer ever again.
“That’s a debate that has to happen. What the answer to that debate is I honestly don’t know.”
I do think there is a discussion that has to be had about it.”
The MP also talked about her own experience of being bullied
She said: “I don’t really remember much of the details, I just remember it was horrible every day going into an environment where everybody is talking about you and you can’t say anything.”
