My grandson holds his breath if he doesn’t get his way, is there something you’d recommend to get him to stop this tactic?

Breath holding attacks are quite a common occurrence in toddlers. These spells are not harmful and they don’t result in any long-term damage but they can be quite frightening to observe. Sometimes parents can be tuned in to when these events are about to happen, and sometimes distracting the child can be useful. In general, staying calm and making as little fuss as possible is best.

I’ve got arthritis in my knees but I’m keen to take up cycling.

With arthritis it’s a good idea to keep the joints as mobile as possible. Obviously you may be limited by the severity of the condition but if you feel able then a bike may be a good form of exercise for you. I would suggest that you start gently and continue as you are able. Your joints may feel a little stiff afterwards but hopefully this will wear off. If you are experiencing an increase in pain and find your mobility is worse then it may be cycling is not for you.

I have large, blue bags under my eyes and it makes me quite self-conscious. Are there any NHS options for treatment?

Unfortunately with the constraints on the NHS these days any procedures done for cosmetic reasons are very limited. I feel that it would be very unlikely for you to have any treatment for this problem on the NHS. Sometimes camouflage with makeup can help – although you may be more comfortable as a women doing this than if you’re a man. You may opt to go private if you are in a position to do so.

Unfortunately the Doc can’t directly respond to each query, or guarantee a reply. When in doubt contact your own GP
