William Wallace was sent to London to face a trial that would eventually order his execution. After the Scots were defeated by the English in July, 1298, Wallace was stripped of his titles and declared an outlaw. He escaped to France but on his return to Scotland was betrayed by Sir John Menteith and captured near Glasgow on August 3.
