Lynden Gooch delivered the clinical blow to ensure Jack Ross’ reign as Sunderland manager got off to a winning start courtesy of a 2- 1 home victory over Charlton.

In front of a crowd of more than 30,000 on Wearside, Gooch powered in a bullet header in stoppage-time to cap a fine comeback. Lyle Taylor converted a cool penalty after just 10 minutes for the visitors, but Sunderland fought back through Josh Maja and Gooch.

First-half goals from Brandon Hanlan and Josh Parker spoilt A cc ring ton Stanley’s return to the division as Gillingham won 2-0.

Joe Piggott brought Joey Barton back down to earth as his goal saw AFC Wimbledon beat Fleetwood Town 1-0.

Goalkeeper Mark Howard made a string of fine sides in his second debut for Blackpool, with his heroics earning his side a 0- 0 draw at League One new boys Wycombe Wanderers.
