Simon Callow In De Profundis
THEATRE
Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, until Aug 26
After a critically-acclaimed run in the West End, De Profundis, adapted by Frank Mcguinness, comes to Edinburgh where Callow made his stage debut in 1973.
Here he performs the searing letter that Oscar Wilde wrote to his lover, Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas.
Imprisoned, Wilde was forbidden from creating works of fiction. Towards the end of his sentence, he was permitted to write – though not send – the bitter diatribe later published as De Profundis which, it became clear, is in fact a love letter.
