1971 FROZEN IN TIME

-

Willie Collum has been in the firing line since his decision to send off Rangers’ Daniel Candeias for a second yellow card at St Mirren last Saturday.

The referee can consider himself to have got off lightly in comparison to whistler, Ray Tinkler, back in April, 1971.

He was the man in the middle when West Brom visited Elland Road, with the hosts in hot pursuit of the title. But Leeds United were already a goal down when chaos erupted in the 69th minute.

Tony Brown broke forward, and with Colin Suggett some 15 yards offside, linesman Bill Troupe put up his flag. But, unbelievably, the ref waved play on and Brown crossed for Jeff Astle to put Albion two up.

Elland Road went wild. United players surrounded Tinkler, grown men in suits invaded the field trying to get at the ref, Albion players became his impromptu bodyguard and Troupe was hit by an object thrown from the crowd.

After four minutes of madness, the game restarted. Leeds pulled a goal back through Allan Clarke, but a killer blow to their title hopes had been delivered.
