Anyone who commutes to work by car will know that the roads are increasingly busy.

And, accordingly, motor insurance payouts have reached record levels this year, with more than £23 million typically being paid every day, according to figures from the Association of British Insurers.

In the first nine months of 2018, a total of £6.4 billion was paid out to private motorists and in compensation to crash victims.
